Just hours before his sudden demise, Indian industrialist Sunjay Kapur had taken to social media to express his grief over the tragic Air India crash that occurred in Ahmedabad on June 12.
In a heartfelt post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Kapur wrote, “Terrible news of the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected. May they find strength in this difficult hour. 🙏 #planecrash.”

Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, had taken off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport en route to London Gatwick when it tragically crashed just minutes after take-off. The incident claimed the lives of more than 200 people, including crew and passengers. The news sparked nationwide mourning and condolences from several public figures, including Kapur.
Who Was Sunjay Kapur?
Kapur’s post has since been reshared and commented on by followers, with many expressing disbelief and sorrow at the tragic turn of events. “Heartbreaking to read this now, knowing what followed,” one user commented. Another wrote, “Life is so unpredictable. He was mourning lives lost in a crash, not knowing he’d be gone the same day.”
Sunjay was a well-known name in business and social circles and had a long-standing association with motorsports and polo. He was previously married to Karisma Kapoor, and the two share two children together – daughter Samaira and son Kiaan.
Before marrying Karisma Kapoor, Sunjay Kapur was married to designer Nandita Mahtani. Their marriage lasted two years before they separated in 2003. The same year, he tied the knot with Karisma, but the couple parted ways in 2014, and their highly publicised divorce was finalised in 2016.
