Sunjay Kapur passed away at 53 after suffering a heart attack during a polo match in the UK.
Sunjay Kapur, prominent Indian industrialist and ex-husband of Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, passed away at the age of 53 in the United Kingdom on Thursday, June 12. As per sources, he reportedly suffered a heart attack while playing polo on Thursday.
Known for his passion for the sport, Kapur was riding when a bee allegedly entered his mouth, triggering a fatal cardiac arrest. Despite immediate attention, he could not be revived.
Kapur, chairman of Sona Comstar and a key figure in the automotive industry, also served as Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Northern Region. Under his leadership, the CII worked across seven Indian states—Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and three Union Territories, including Chandigarh, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
The incident is said to have taken place during a match, where Sunjay collapsed on the field. Despite immediate efforts, medical personnel were unable to revive him.
Sunjay was a well-known name in business and social circles and had a long-standing association with motorsports and polo. He was previously married to Karisma Kapoor, and the two share two children together – daughter Samaira and son Kiaan.
Before marrying Karisma Kapoor, Sunjay Kapur was married to designer Nandita Mahtani. Their marriage lasted two years before they separated in 2003. The same year, he tied the knot with Karisma, but the couple parted ways in 2014, and their highly publicised divorce was finalised in 2016.
In 2017, Sunjay married his longtime partner, model Priya Sachdev, in an intimate ceremony reportedly held in Delhi. The couple welcomed a son, Azarias Kapur, and also co-parented Priya’s daughter, Safira Chatwal, from her previous marriage.
