Expressing his shock and disappointment, Jaideep said that actors from Hindi-speaking states cannot read the Devanagari script.

Actors Jaideep Ahlawat and Manoj Bajpayee recently revealed that many Bollywood actors today find it difficult to read scripts written in Hindi. Expressing his shock and disappointment, Jaideep told Filmfare that actors from Hindi-speaking states, acting in Hindi language films, cannot read the Devanagari script.
Jaideep Ahlawat said, “I was shocked to see actors can’t read scripts in Hindi while acting in Hindi movies.” He added, “Main itna surprise ho gaya main mazaak nahi kar raha hoon. Likhi hui Hindi actors ko padhne nahi aati. Agar wo Devanagari mein likha hua hai toh wo nahi padh sakta.”
He mentioned, “Isse bura kuch nahi ho sakta. Agar koi South India se hai toh dikkat nahi hai, but Hindi bhashik actor Hindi nahi padh sakta. Har dusre word pe fumble hai.” Jaideep Ahlawat added that while these actors cannot read the Devanagari script, they understand the Roman script well. “Roman mein denge toh padh lenge,” he said.
Jaideep’s revelation has gone viral on social media sites, especially Reddit. One person wrote, “On the latest Koffee with Karan season, Saif did not know a Hindi word or something, and Sharmila Tagore rebuked him that he, being a Hindi film actor, doesn’t understand Hindi. It is a shame.” Another added, “Is he talking about Saif? lmao.” Another wrote, “I’m 100 per cent sure that he is talking about Saif Ali Khan. They recently worked together in that heist movie. Saif is already infamous for his KwK putramoh episode.”
However, many noted that this is not limited to Bollywood actors but is also the case with the general population. One person wrote, “I know many people who live in the cities and find Hindi difficult to read (difficult, not that they can’t read at all). It’s a problem with our school system and not just the new actors.” Another added, “Even normal people struggle with Devanagari. Hindi signboards and advertisements are being written in Roman for average people.” Another person commented, “That’s because studying in English medium is most prevalent in our country. We just don’t get exposed to Devanagari Hindi much. I’ll be honest. I’m just like that. I can speak perfect Hindi, but if you asked me to read Hindi, I’ll be able to do it, slowly, but I’ll start having a headache, lol.”
Jaideep Ahlawat’s comments have sparked a debate on social media about the relevance and importance of the Devanagari script. Meanwhile, the actor will soon be seen in the next season of The Family Man with Manoj Bajpayee.
