It is reported that several casualties are feared as rescue operations continue. Early reports indicate that the Air India aircraft crashed in a densely populated neighborhood near Ahmedabad airport, leading local residents to rush to the site and assist in rescue efforts. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has reportedly traveled from Surat to Ahmedabad to assess the situation. As per an IANS report, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has spoken with Patel about the crash, and the central government has promised full assistance in handling the aftermath.
Footage of the crash shows the aircraft flying abnormally low and struggling to maintain altitude before it slammed into the ground and burst into a massive fireball at 1:38 p.m. The plane was carrying a full load of fuel for its long-distance flight to London.
According to reports, the pilot sent out a mayday call shortly after takeoff. However, no further communication was received by air traffic controllers despite repeated attempts to re-establish contact.
Videos from the crash site show charred debris and thick smoke rising into the sky, with emergency crews working at the scene. Several clips also captured injured passengers being taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
