Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao finalised their divorce in 2021 after 16 years of marriage.
Aamir Khan is currently promoting his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, but the actor recently got candid about his personal life in an interview with Zoom. The 59-year-old star reflected on his two divorces and his current relationship with Gauri Spratt.
Speaking about the emotional toll of separation, Aamir said, “In India, marriage is a very serious thing. When your marriage breaks, you go to divorce, and people don’t like that. Emotionally, they don’t like it either. I know that too, and I also believe that marriage is a very important thing and shouldn’t be taken lightly. I completely agree with that. That’s why I can present this matter truthfully in front of people, and I should. I do speak the truth that I was married to Reena, but we can no longer stay married, or I was married to Kiran, and now we can no longer stay married. So, it’s a loss for all of us. Our families are not happy with this and we are also not doing it happily.”
Aamir further added that pretending to be in a happy marriage would have been dishonest. “I can pretend that Kiran and I are happy together and we can live like that our whole lives and personally, I can do whatever I want, she can do whatever she wants, but in the eyes of the world, we are still married. We can live like that too, but that would be a lie.”
In a moment of lightheartedness, the actor added with a smile, “Shaadi me main kamyab nahi hua hun, lekin divorce me main hua hoon (I wasn’t successful in marriage, but I’ve been successful in divorce).”
The actor also said that he still believes in the institution of marriage. “It’s a very old institution and I have the deepest regard in my heart for this institution. It’s a very beautiful feeling. I would want that every person gets to experience this,” he added.
