The film, which opens on June 13, centres around a high-end matchmaker (Johnson), her mysterious new partner (Pascal), and a complicated ex (Evans). Early reactions from advanced screenings have hit social media, and fans can’t stop raving.
One early viewer on X wrote, “#Materialists avoids the sophomore slump by telling an honest and empathetic story of dating and love. The dialogue is incredible… Easily one of the best movies of the year.” Others lauded Song’s storytelling, calling it “intimate and beautiful,” with one review stating, “Celine Song crafted something so intimate and beautiful that it left a forever mark on my heart.”
The cast is receiving equal admiration. He’s incredible in Materialists — he genuinely broke me,” read one post. Dakota Johnson also received high praise, with many calling her performance one of her finest yet. “Dakota Johnson & Chris Evans give their best performances to date! + Pedro is just amazing! The perfect follow-up to Past Lives,” shared another viewer.
One user summarised the film’s emotional depth: “Materialists is so incredibly moving. Celine Song really makes me believe in love. Such a brilliant, honest, insightful film about how the worthiness you see in yourself impacts your relationships and dating. Achingly vulnerable and honest, Celine is one of our best writers!!”
With its compelling narrative, strong direction and a trio of emotionally rich performances, Materialists seems to strike the perfect balance between heartbreak and healing. Whether you’re drawn by Celine Song’s unique storytelling or simply excited to see Chris Evans and Dakota Johnson share the screen, this film looks poised to become one of 2025’s most talked-about releases.
